Gallery Label:
Born in New York, the subject was the son of Peter and Catherine (Moore) Lorillard. He built his fortune as a leather merchant and operated his own tannery in the area then known as the Swamp, where all the leather business in New York City was conducted. His portrait, which descended through the Lorillard and Cammann families, was a gift to the Society from his great-grandson.
