The subject was the son of Thomas Stokes, a merchant, and Elizabeth Ann (Boulter) Stokes who came to New York from England in 1798. Stokes was a partner in Phelps, Dodge and Company, New York, and Phelps, Dodge and Company, Liverpool. With his son Anson Phelps Stokes he successfully entered the banking business in 1879. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandson.
