Gilt bronze struck medal with obverse bearing nude bust of Garfield facing left with legend: "JAMES A. GARFIELD." Reverse contains inscription within closed ribbon-bound oak and laurel wreath: "INAUGURATED/PRESIDENT/OF THE/UNITED STATES/MARCH 4, 1881/ASSASSINATED/JULY 2, 1881/DIED/SEPT. 19, 1881."
