Gallery Label:
James Scobie, a merchant and ship-owner, was born in Argyleshire, Scotland, and came to America with his brother John. He settled first in Boston but later moved to Marblehead where he married Mary Pedrick (ca. 1769-1804), the daughter of Knott Pedrick, on August 28, 1791. Catherine Tanch (b. 1793), their eldest daughter, was the original owner of this miniature; she bequeathed it to her sister Ann Phippard (b. 1803).
