The subject was the son of Elihu Slawson and Esther (Case) Slawson of Goshen, N.Y. He was a cotton trader in New Orleans, and when the city fell to federal troops on May 1, 1862, he was forced to evacuate his family and later to flee himself to Paris, where they remained until the end of the war. Upon their return they established residence in New York; Slawson became president of the Crosstown Street Railway and invented and patented the Slawson fare box.
