This small portrait represents Rogers as a child of about four or five years, and was probably a study for a larger painting. It was formerly identified as John Rogers, Jr., the subject's father, but the artist did not leave Cincinnati to establish his studio in New York City until 1870, at which time John III would have been four years old; moreover, this portrait is very similar to the Society's plaster bust of the subject, which was modeled by his father in 1871.
