Bronze struck medallion with obverse showing left-facing clothed bust of Joseph Francis facing left with legend: "THE . VNITED . STATES . OF . AMERICA . BY . ACT . OF . CONGRESS . 27 . AVGUST . 1888 . . ./to JOSEPH . FRANCIS . /INVENTOR . AND . FRAMER ."; inscription below bust: "OF.THE.MEANS.FOR. THE./ LIFE. SAVING. SERVICE./ OF.THE.COVNTRY."; thirty-eight stars around. Reverse shows oak wreath enclosing scene of life-saving equipment in operation along the sea-coast; dates at lower center: "1801-1812/1850."
