The subject, a native of Litchfield, Connecticut, established a law practice in Kingston, New York, and was subsequently elected to the state assembly (1820) and the United States Congress (1821). He next served as judge of the Dutchess County Circuit Court and in 1851 became a judge of the Court of Appeals of the State of New York and presiding judge from 1853 to 1855.
