The key ring belonging to Eldridge Close contains six keys for Charity Hospital on Blackwell's Island, where Close presumably worked sometime after 1865. Charity Hospital opened in 1858 at the southern end of Blackwell (now Roosevelt) Island. Most of its patients suffered from alcoholism, venereal diseases, or both. Medical care was provided by the Bellevue Medical Board until the hospital was reorganized in 1866. Around 1892 the institution was renamed City Hospital.
