Description:
Ladle with coconut shell bowl and whale jaw bone handle which fits into a pewter socket; handle bracket is a five-point star with copper rivets joins pewter socket to bowl.
Gallery Label:
According to Stuart M. Frank, curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the ladle is made of bone, which was likely cut from a Sperm whale’s jaw. Whalemen commonly referred to a whale's jaw bone as the pan bone.
