Circular metal lapel stud with shank and circular backing; front of stud covered with a brown fabric and printed: "HARRY HOWARD/BORN AUG/20/1822/DIED/FEB. 6 96".
Gallery Label:
Harry Howard (1822-1896) was Chief Engineer of the New York Volunteer Fire Department from 1857 to 1860. This lapel stud was probably worn as a symbol of mourning after Howard's death in 1896.
