Description:
Bronze struck triangular medal with obverse depicting allegorical female figure of Liberty in Phrygian cap draping herself and a young semi-nude female representing France in American flag, set within circular field surrounded by star-studded border with laurel wreaths at upper corners labelled "US" and "NJ" and at lower corner containing fleur-de-lis; legend around central image: ".VNIVERSAL.EXPOSITION.SAINT.LOVIS.VNITED.STATES.OF.AMERICA."; date in exergue: ".MCMIV." Reverse depicts a raised tablet at center decorated with shell and inscribed: ".GOLD MEDAL./.LOVISIANA.PVRCHASE./.EXPOSITION.", surmounted by American eagle and flanked by two dolphins beneath; border identical to that of obverse. Medal is inset into dark-red square cloth-covered fitted presentation case with dark red silk velvet interior.
