Description:
Machete with straight, single-edged steel blade of even width from hilt to point and bone handle with brass rivets and base plate; leather scabbard with embossed leaf motif in two parallel bands on obverse.

According to the accession records, this machete, which originally belonged to a Cuban insurgent, was picked up during the campaign against Santiago de Cuba (June-August 1898) by 2nd Lieutenant Russell C. Langdon, 8th U.S. Infantry, and carried by him as part of his equipment. This object is described in the accession records as "a typical native weapon, used on sugar cane and underbrush in peacetime, and against enemies in wartime."
