Bronze struck medal with obverse depicting nude bust of Zachary Taylor facing right with branches of laurel and oak beneath and surrounding legend: "MAJOR GENERAL ZACHARY TAYLOR./RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS: MAY 9. 1848." Reverse shows elaborate battle scene above sprays of cactus and oak, encircled by two serpents; legend: "BUENA VISTA FEB. 22. & 23. 1847."
