Description:
Group portrait. Studies of Native Americans: this tribe was decimated by smallpox within a year after Catlin painted these portraits.

The 2,000 Mandans on the west bank of the Upper Missouri River were all destroyed by smallpox the year following Catlin's painting of these portraits
