Medal suspended from multicolored ribbon. Armorial shield held up by eagle. DO RIGHT / AND FEAR / NO MAN. On verso: American flag shield. THAT GOVERNMENT BY THE PEOPLE SHALL NOT PERISH / APRIL VI MDCCCCXVII
The popular phrase "Do right..." most likely originated in a 1450 book of proverbs. The relationship of the date, 1817, to the phrase from Lincoln's Gettysburg address is puzzling.
