Description:
Star-shaped medal of honor to Maj. Clifford Thompson 1863, with club-shaped points; leaves and other interlocking vegetal forms surround the star; central circle: "UNITED-STATES OF AMERICA-" with shield surrounds image of a classical soldier in profile ; attached above is an eagle clutching an olive branch and three arrows; below: "VALOR"; gold, brass, green enamel and blue silk with white stars.

This medal of honor was presented to Clifford Thomson, First Lieutenant, Company A, First New York Calvary for his role in the battle at Chancellorsville, VA on May 2, 1863. He averted the defeat of the army by volunteering to approach the enemy to ascertain its position. Though in the midst of friendly and enemy fire, he returned unharmed. He served the Union until November 27, 1896.
