Description:
Gilt aluminum struck medal with obverse showing seal of Peru within central roundel, enclosed by palm and laurel wreath, with sun above. Reverse bears inscription within beaded border: "RECUERDO DE LA VISITA/AL/PERU/DEL SENOR/ELIHU ROOT/SECRETARIO/DE ESTADO DE LOS/EE.UU./DE/AMERICA/LIMA STERE. 1906." Medal is set into square dark red fitted leather case with white silk satin and dark green silk velvet interior.
Gallery Label:
Elihu Root (1845-1937) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. He served as Secretary of War under McKinley and Roosevelt (1899-1903) and as Secretary of State under Roosevelt (1905-1909). From 1909- 1915 he was a Republican Senator from New York.
This medal was issued in remembrance of Root's visit to Peru during his unprecedented diplomatic tour of South Africa in 1906.
