Description:
Bronze struck military decoration with obverse showing image of fort with American flag above, surrounded by stars; legend: 'FORT SUMTER"; inscription below image: "AUG. 23d 1863." Reverse with legend: "FOR GALLANT AND MERITORIOUS CONDUCT/PRESENTED/BY [illegible signature]." Hole punched in the edge at top center.
Gallery Label:
This medal was awarded to Major Robert Anderson, who was in command of Union troops at Fort Sumter at the time of the Confederate bombardment on April 12-13, 1861, by the citizens of New York City "as a slight tribute to his patriotism."
