Description:
Metal fragment; according to the paper label affixed to this piece, it is a plate from the turret of U.S.S. Monitor, discarded by Ericsson just after its victorious engagement with the Confederate vessel Merrimac in 1862.

According to documentation in the Naval History Society records, this piece and three others were donated in 1921 by Harry Lydenberg, New York Public Library.
