Gallery Label:
The subject was the daughter of Henry and Laura Whelen of Philadelphia. She married Robert Goelet in 1904. In 1914 this marriage was terminated and she married the sculptor Henry Clews, Jr. (d. 1937). Mrs. Clews spent much of her time in France. She founded La Napoule Art Foundation-Henry Clews Memorial on the French Riviera to promote Franco-American cultural relations.
