Description:
Wood, iron, and steel rifle; iron furniture; stamped marks forward of hammer and at tail of lockplate, breechblock, barrel bands, and tang of buttplate.

Designed in 1865 by Springfield armorer E.S. Allin, trapdoor model rifles and carbines replaced the muzzle-loading firearms that had been used during the Civil War, and became the standard weapons used by U.S. forces during the western Indian wars.
