Description:
Wood, iron, and steel rifle; iron furniture; stamped marks forward of hammer and at tail of lockplate, breechblock, barrel bands, tang of buttplate, receiver, barrel; stamped cartouches on left side of stock at wrist; leather sling with brass buckle.

Designed in 1865 by Springfield armorer E.S. Allin, trapdoor model rifles and carbines replaced the muzzle-loading firearms that had been used during the Civil War, and became the standard weapons used by U.S. forces during the western Indian wars.
