Description:
Wood, steel, and iron rifle; iron furniture; ramrod bayonet; stamped marks on breechblock, lockplate, barrel bands, and barrel tang; stamped cartouche on left stock at wrist; incised mark on right buttstock.

Designed in 1865 by Springfield armorer E.S. Allin, trapdoor model rifles and carbines replaced the muzzle-loading firearms that had been used during the Civil War, and became the standard weapons used by U.S. forces during the western Indian wars.
