Description:
Wooden hollow plane composed of a rectangular stock with a concave sole perforated by a central slit through which a concave blade is inserted at downward angle and tightened by a wooden wedge.

Before the American Civil War, the Bowery was one of the main centers of commerce in New York City. At this time the Bowery was filled with a variety of businesses and workshops including hardware companies such as Reed & Auerbacher at 229 Bowery, New York that produced and sold a number of products including tools such as this plane.
