Gallery Label:
Harriet Chew (1775-1861) was the daughter of Benjamin Chew, chief justice of Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth (Oswald) Chew of Philadelphia. She married Charles Carroll (1775-1825) on July 17, 1800. Their residence, "Homewood," located just north of Baltimore, was built by Charles Carroll's father in 1802. This miniature is based on an engraving said to be after a portrait by John Trumbull (Collection Yale University). The engraving first appeared in R. W. Griswold's "The Republican Court" (1855).
