Mary Carter Thompson (ca. 1845-1899), the daughter of Judge Lucas P. Thompson of Staunton, Virginia, became the second wife of John Lee Carroll (1830-1911) in 1877. A native of Maryland, Carroll served as a state senator and from 1876 to 1880 was governor of the state.
