Gallery Label:
Sarah Helen Townsend was the daughter of Isaac and Mary (Austen) Townsend. She married Thomas Buchanan Winthrop (1841-1900), the son the Henry Rogers Winthrop, on June 4, 1872. Her husband was a lawyer, a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and served as a Fellow of Yale University from 1891 until his death. The Winthrops maintained residences in New York and Newport, Rhode Island.
