Emily Thorn Vanderbilt was the second daughter of William Henry and Maria Louisa (Kissam) Vanderbilt, and granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. She married William Douglas Sloane (1844-1915), an officer of the W. and J. Sloane home furnishings concern of New York, on December 10, 1872. She became the second wife of Henry White (ca. 1850-1927), a diplomat who had served as U.S. ambassador to France and Italy, on November 3, 1920.
