Description:
Circular base metal commemorative medal for New York City Evacuation Day Centennial; obverse with New York City coat of arms surrounded by laurel wreath and flags; reverse with profiles of Washington, Knox, and Clinton. Top of medal has ring for hanging.
Gallery Label:
Evacuation Day celebrated the final departure of British military forces from the United States on November 25, 1783. For more than a century, Evacuation Day was marked by martial parades, patriotic oratory, and banquets; its one hundredth anniversary was one of the great civic events of the nineteenth century in New York City. The holiday ceased to be observed after the First World War.
