Bronze struck medal with obverse depicting nude male bust facing left, surrounded by legend: "Wm. J. MULLEN GOLD DIAL MANUFACTURER/ESTABLISHED 1828 N.YORK." Reverse shows group of children engaged in various crafts with winged female figures holding laurel wreaths and branches above their heads; inscription in exergue: "A MEDAL AWARDED BY THE/MECHANICS INSTITUTE/N.Y. [date illegible]"; illegible legend around border.
