Gold struck medal with obverse depicting nude bust of Alfred Nobel facing left; legend: "ALFT.NOBEL.NAT.MDCCCXXXIII.OB.MDCCCXCVI." Reverse depicts three nude youths forming a circle; surrounding legend: "PRO.PACE.ET.FRATERNITATE.GENTIUM."

Elihu Root (1845-1937) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. He served as Secretary of War under McKinley and Roosevelt (1899-1903) and as Secretary of State under Roosevelt (1905-1909). From 1909-1915 he was a Republican Senator from New York.
