Description:
Sword with straight, single-edged steel blade with fuller running from ricasso almost to point; brass hilt cast in one piece with grip ribbed in imitation of wire wrapping, globular pommel, double kidney-shaped counter-guard, and short flared quillon with oval button finial; black leather scabbard with brass mount with elongated frog stud at throat and brass tip with slightly asymmetrical drag.

This sword represents a type adopted by the War Department in 1840 for use by noncommissioned officers. The model was still worn by American sergeants in the early years of the twentieth century.
