Description: 
Dark blue wool single-breasted artillery 2nd Lieutenant's uniform coat; 1" closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye), with single gold bar at each end of shoulder straps against red ground, 9 artillery buttons down the front of the bodice (2 missing); closed false cuffs with 3 buttons on each 8 1/4 (flat) sleeve; 4 panels on the back of the bodice; inside lined with dark green silk, a horizontal slit pocket at each breast, front of bodice lightly padded and quilted, sleeves lined with white twill-weave linen; all buttons have shield-breasted eagle clutching a branch and arrows in its talons, with "A" on the shield.

The donor purchased this lieutenant's dress coat in 1876 after he returned from the Civil War and rejoined has battery, Reynolds Battery L. of the 1st New York Regiment.
