Description:
Black Naval officer's dress waistcoat with lapels which are rounded at the bottom, no collar, 3 buttons at the stomach which are cast with an eagle clutching an anchor in its talons encircled by stars; the front is made of wool, the back is made of black silk, with 2 straps at the waist which buckle at the center onto rectangular buckle with double-tongued chape; lined with white twill-weave silk.
Gallery Label:
According to a note found with this waistcoat, it may have belonged to Eleazar Lord (1788-1871); however, the button markings indicate that it was made after 1877, the year Henry V. Allien went into business for himself.
