According military expert William Brown, this coat was probably worn by Brigadier General Samuel K. Zook, who commanded the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Corps at Gettysburg. He was mortally wounded late in the afternoon of July 2nd while leading his brigade against General Longstreet's attack in the wheatfield. Brown's records indicate that there was a tag inside the coat noting that it was purchased by the Society, with Zook's name attached.
