Description: 
Olive drab wool Major's Ordnance Department double-breasted overcoat, with deep (5 1/2") closed double collar (2 sets hooks and eyes), with attachments beneath for cape (missing); 5 buttons down each side of the chest, vertical side pockets on both sides, left pocket lining is open to the inside of the coat, with button fastening; sleeves have no cuffs and are closed, with Major's rank black cord sleeve knots; back of bodice in 2 panels, pleated at the center beneath with 2 straps at the waistline which button together at the center with 2 buttons, skirt is slit; all buttons are horn; lined with olive drab twill-weave silk, with horizontal slit pocket on the left.

This Ordnance Department overcoat was worn by Major Edward Gilbert Schermerhorn, who served as Military Secretary to New York's governor in 1913. He resigned when the governor was impeached, but a Special Act of Legislature reinstated his rank and grade for life.
