Born in Boston, Edwin Lord Weeks (1849-1903) studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and with Jéan-Leon Gerome (1824-1904) and Léon J.F. Bonnat (1833-1922). Weeks traveled extensively in Egypt, Jerusalem, Damascus, and Tangier, developing a specialty in Orientalist subjects.
