The Hudson River Day Line developed out of the Hudson River Steamboat Association, a quasi-monopoly of the major Hudson River ship operators formed in 1832. It traveled between New York City and Albany. The "Washington Irving" was built by the New York Ship-building Company, Camden, NJ in 1912. The HDL provided service along the Hudson until 1949, when it was disbanded.
