Gallery Label:
The subject was the second son of Major Henry Schenck and Hannah (Brett) Schenck of Fishkill Landing, New York. Schenck was said to be "the first man that ever started a manufactory for domestic fabrics in [the state of New York]." He also erected a "machine factory" and started a "cloth (woolen) factory called the 'Rocky Glen Cloth Co.'" (See Joseph A. Scoville, "Old Merchants of New York City," I, 1863, pp. 82-84.)
