Description:
Section of wood from the dismantled United States frigate "Chesapeake."
Gallery Label:
The U. S. frigate "Chesapeake" was captured during a confrontation with the British frigate "Shannon" June 1, 1913. According to the donor, the "Chesapeake" was subsequently purchased from the British government by a man named Holmes, of Portsmouth, England, who then sold much of the wood to John Prior, a miller from Wickham. Prior built a new mill in 1820, using beams and timbers from the dismantled "Chesapeake." This relic was obtained from T. E. Edney, a subsequent owner of the mill.
