$3,500 a year. On August 28, 1963, a major protest took place of over 250,000 participants. Located in Washington D.C., the protesters met to form the largest gathering of people to that date. On July 2, 1964, President Johnson passed the most extensive civil rights legislation since the Reconstruction Period, called the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
