This pin was produced and distributed by Coalition for the Homeless, the New York City-based advocacy and service organization helping homeless men, women, and children. The figure 17,000 refers to the number of homeless children in New York City - an all-time record reached in 2003. According to the Coalition, the number of children sleeping in homeless shelters more than doubled in the preceding five years. Children now represent 43% of the record 39,000 homeless New Yorkers in the shelters.
