Gallery Label:
Donald Manes (b. 1934) was elected borough president of Queens and worked to encourage many economic developments in Queens. Two days after being sworn in for his fourth term as borough president in 1986, his career collapsed when he attempted suicide. He stood to be indicted by federal and city prosecutors for having accepted bribes since 1979 from vendors seeking contracts with the Parking Violations Bureau. Manes resigned from office and took his own life a few weeks later.
