Rudolph W. Giuliani (b. 1944), popularly known as Rudy, served as Mayor of New York City from 1993 to 2001. In 1993, he waged a vigorous campaign in which he criticized Mayor David Dinkins for an indifferent approach to managing the city and pledged to reduce business taxes, assume a tougher stance on crime, and privatize some city services. He defeated Dinkins to become the city's first Republican mayor in twenty-eight years.
