Description:
Gold medal with black onyx inlay, with hinged pin and hook attachments on reverse; medal is nearly rectangular, with top flaring out slightly, top is slightly curved; obverse depicts a plumed blue armor helmet and gorget in profile above a red shield with a white cross at the center having 5 upturned crescents, shield set between 2 floral garlands; central image is surrounded with letters of the alphabet, "S H T W S S T K"; inscription throughout reverse.

This pin was presented to John Stoneacre Ellis (1828-1896), who was the younger brother of the donor's husband, Augustus Van Horne Ellis, in San Francisco in 1858.
