Hendrick (born ca. 1680), the noted chief of the Mohawk Indians, was killed in an engagement with the French at the Battle of Lake George, September 8, 1755. The baroness copied her portrait from an engraving entitled The brave old Hendrick, the great Sachem or Chief of the Mohawk Indians, one of the Six nations now in Alliance with & Subject to the King of Great Britain, sold by Eliz Bakewell opposite Birchin Lane, Cornhill. A copy of the original engraving is in the Print Room, NYHS.
