Gish began her career as a child stage performer with her sister Dorothy, and was cast by D. W. Griffith in her first silent film in 1912. The typically played the wholesome waif, and appeared in dozens of silent films in this, her signature role. She continued to play supporting roles in sound films in the thirties and forties. Her last movie, "The Whales of August," was released in 1987.
