A graduate of New York Law School (1912), Ernst served as counsel for the American Newspaper Guild, Authors League of America, U.S. War Production Board, New York State Legislative Committee for Hard of Hearing, Dramatists Guild, and American Civil Liberties Union. He wrote extensively on issues of censorship and privacy.
