Description:
Horn and silver plate powder horn with wooden cover over one end carved with concentric circles, silver plate spout at opposite end with spring-loaded pouring device; horn incised with map of New York from New York City north to Lake George, with British Royal Standard at the center.
Gallery Label:
According to the accession record, this powder horn was owned by James Moncrieffe (1744-1793), a military engineer for the British army. Moncrieffe served in the siege of Havanna; he also constructed the British defenses at Savannah in 1779 and at Charleston in 1780.
